2017 Inductees Announced
The Ukrainian Sports Museum and Hall of Fame, located in Whippany, New Jersey, is proud to announce the 2017 Hall of Fame Inductees to be celebrated at the Induction Ceremony on September 16th. The Sports Museum’s mission is to honor individuals, teams, and organizations prominent in the history of Ukrainian sports. The Hall of Fame’s goal is to celebrate the accomplishments and achievements of the most decorated, successful, and dedicated members our cultural community has to offer.
The Sports Museum and Hall of Fame depends on the generosity of the Ukrainian American and Ukrainian Canadian communities to continue its goal of bringing together a priceless collection of sports memories and memorabilia and honoring the legacy of athletes, coaches, referees, and powerful individuals of Ukrainian origin or descent. The Hall of Fame brings together the builders, the amateur athletes, the Olympians and the professional athletes who have excelled for a long period of time in sports ranging from soccer, to volleyball, to boxing, tennis, skiing, and more.
The stories shared by last year’s inaugural class at the Induction Ceremony filled the room with pride, laughs, tears, and joy as people flew in from all over Canada and the United States to be a part of the festivities. As this year’s class joins them in having their legacy enshrined in the Ukrainian Sports Hall of Fame, please join us in celebrating with them.

This year’s selection committee had the privilege of including several of last year’s inductees, and their personal insights into this year’s nominees were very powerful testimonials to the strength of the ties that sport creates within the Ukrainian diaspora community. There was strong competition among the nominees to identify who would become part of the Hall of Fame Class of 2017, as many individuals were nominated with decades of service to their sport and to their community. Individuals were reviewed under several categories: Professional Athletes, Olympic Athletes, Amateur Athletes, and Builders. Ukrainian Club Teams and teams with strong Ukrainian leadership and representation were also considered based on their accomplishments.
Memorial Books commemorating this year’s Hall of Fame class, including biographical information, photographs, and more, will be available for order on the Museum’s web site, and will be provided to all attendees of the banquet gala. All proceeds raised through advertising and sales of the Commemorative Books, and from attendance at the gala, will go directly to supporting the Ukrainian Sports Museum and Hall of Fame. As a non-profit organization, all donations are also considered tax-deductible.
The Board of Directors is authorized to elect one person each year into the Hall of Fame based upon the recommendation of the Veterans Committee. Candidates to be considered for election into the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee shall be those candidates who have been on the ballot for seven years and not elected.
Athletes of Days Gone By
Sport Athletes of years past who played prior to the development of television and movies, and where there is no documentation of their talents may be inducted by the Board of Directors. We honor them as true trailblazers who overcame many obstacles, both on the fields of play and off, to achieve athletic greatness and paved the way for many who followed in their footsteps.
